![]() There'll be bonfires and firework displays in and around Richmond on the Fifth of November. Richmond Town Council and the Fleece Hotel are presenting the town's annual fireworks display from 6 pm, at Richmond School. The display starts at 7 pm, and although it's free there will be a bucket collection. (Will there be a bonfire? We don't know.) Ten miles away, on Reeth Green (a fabulous location, surrounded by the darkness of the Swaledale fells) the annual Reeth Bonfire and Fireworks display kicks off at 6:30. Again, it's free, with a bucket collection. A barbecue will be available throughout the evening. In Leyburn, there'll be a bonfire night event at Thornborough Hall, from 7 to 8:30 pm - we have no other details. Organisers of these events seem rather coy with their publicity. They should really post a free ad in What's On Richmond. Perhaps your best bet is just to follow the flashes and bangs on the night?

![]() Does that sound too good to be true? Don't know why we didn't spot this sooner. We carry copies of a promotional leaflet called Go Yorkshire, which has a page of discount vouchers. One of the vouchers entitles up to five visitors to enter a single English Heritage site with a discount of 20% off the total entry price. Richmond Castle, barely 20 yards from our Information Centre, is an English Heritage property. By our calculation the voucher could save you - um, errr... A tidy sum, anyway! The offer is valid until March 2025. We've not got many of these Go Yorkshire leaflets left, and we don't know whether we can get more, so pop into Richmond Information Centre soon and pick up a copy ![]() Here's an early Christmas offer for the racing-obsessed person in your life! Two years ago we began to stock a lovely book called A Short History of Richmond Racecourse and its Grandstand. It's packed with historic illustrations, amusing tales about jockeys, eccentric owners, trainers, gamblers and soldiers. It answers those eternal questions: Why is there an abandoned horse-racing track high above the town? Why is the old grandstand in ruins? With a whole host of colourful characters, the book will appeal to anyone with an interest in racing, social history, or the town of Richmond. The book was published at £10. It has handsomely covered its costs, so we can now sell it at a clearance price of just £5. With 80 pages, full-colour maps and images, it's a real bargain. Pop in and pick up a copy or - if you're outside Richmond - order it online here. |
