Autumn - best time of the year in the Dales? Some say Spring is best: flower-filled meadows, fresh greenery in the hedgerows, lambs on every hillside. Others prefer Autumn: the muggy heat of August is over; berries and nuts and mushrooms are everywhere; and the prospect of an open fire in a cosy pub suddenly seems a nice antidote to that little bit of chill in the air.
Autumn is also a wonderful time for walking - which brings us to the annual Richmond Walking and Book Festival. From 15 to 24 September, this year's festival features 27 guided walks, ranging from gentle town trails to all-day yomps in the lovely Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors and Teesdale. Details and tickets for the walks, and the literary talks, are at booksandboots.org. Book yourself a nice B&B or hotel from our Accommodation list, and enjoy a fabulous short break. |
