Joe Willis, well known to local residents for his writing in the Northern Echo, and now publisher of Richmondshire Today, has written a guide to Swaledale and Arkengarthdale which really gets behind the scenes. In Swaledale: An Insider's Guide, Joe introduces readers to the shepherds and farmers, the artists and gardeners, the High Court Judge and the bootmaker, the innkeepers, cave rescuers, singers and brass band players who are just some of the fascinating people who live and work in these wild northern Dales. Lavishly illustrated with delightful photos, Swaledale: An Insider's Guide will help you get under the skin of Swaledale. If you love to read countryside magazines like The Dalesman, here's the perfect present for yourself. Buy two or three, even, and that's Christmas sorted! Swaledale: An Insider's Guide costs £5.99, and is now available from Richmond Information Centre and from most Post Offices, newsagents and general outlets in Swaledale. You can also order a copy from our online shop (UK P&P £2.50). Here are two Guy Fawkes' Night events for you to choose from! The bash at Richmond School is organised by the Town Council. Gates open at 18:00 and the fireworks start at 19:00. The fun on Reeth Green starts at 18:00 with the judging of the Guys. The 'winner' will be hoisted to the top of the bonfire for burning. (How worrying... Guy is a very common surname in Swaledale.) The bonfire is lit at half-past, and the fireworks kick off at 19:00. A barbecue will be available throughout (cash only). Both events are free, with a bucket collection. The Richmond organisers ask you not to bring sparklers or pets, and we imagine the Reeth organisers feel the same. We're selling laminated OS maps in the Info Centre at £10 until 21 October - normal price £15.99. But we're by no means the only independent trader in Richmond offering £10 bargains. Over 20 businesses are taking part, including the Station Café/Bar (pizza and a soft drink), The Cheese Press (pack of chutney, crackers and cheese), Nourished (care-products from the Alana range), Lucy Pittaway (four cards), Capelli Hairdressing (Wella hair-care products), Goosewing Studios (earrings, normally £18) - and many others. Time to go shopping around Richmond! Every £10 you spend is estimated to travel round the local economy, providing a boost of some £50 to the town. So shop local! Do yourself - and Richmond - some good! We're taking part in the Magic Tenner campaign, with a really good offer for walkers. You know those wonderful Ordnance Survey maps in the waterproof laminates? The ones you can take out in a Force 8 gale and driving rain on the top of Pen Hill? The ones you can't afford because - gulp - £15.99 is rather expensive, and you'll just settle for the ordinary paper edition..? Good news! For two weeks in October (7th to 21st) we're slashing the price of laminated OS maps to just £10. Stock is limited. Once they're gone, they're gone. Meanwhile, we've got all the popular local maps, including Yorkshire Dales South and West, Yorkshire Dales Northern and Central, Howgill Fells, Darlington and Richmond... Drop by our pod in Richmond Market Hall if you're feeling lucky, or call ahead on 01748 826468. |
